In a Meeting connects your Zoom account to your Slack account. When you join a Zoom meeting, your Slack status is set to 📅 In a Meeting automatically. When the meeting ends or you leave, the status is cleared. There is nothing to install and nothing to maintain.
In one line: connect Slack, connect Zoom, done. Setup takes about two minutes and the integration is free.
1. Before you start
You need all three of the following. No paid plan is required on either side — In a Meeting works with free Zoom and free Slack accounts, and the integration itself is free.
- A Zoom account you can sign in to. Any account type (Basic, Pro, Business, Enterprise) works.
- A Slack account in the workspace where you want your status updated.
- Permission to install apps in that Slack workspace. Some workspaces require an admin to approve new apps. If yours does, Slack will show an approval request instead of the install screen — an admin has to approve it before you can continue.
Zoom account admins: if your Zoom account restricts which Marketplace apps members may install, an account owner or admin needs to pre-approve In a Meeting in the Zoom Marketplace before members can authorize it.
2. Adding the app
The setup is a single flow with two authorizations: Slack first, then Zoom. Start it at inameeting.app.
-
Click “Add to Slack”
On inameeting.app, click Add to Slack. You are taken to Slack's own authorization screen.
-
Approve the Slack permissions
Slack shows you which workspace you are installing into and exactly what the app may do: read and update your own profile status. Pick the right workspace from the dropdown at the top right if you belong to more than one, then click Allow.
You are returned to a confirmation page that says “Slack connected” along with your workspace name.
-
Click “Connect Zoom”
On that confirmation page, click Connect Zoom. This is the second half of setup — without it we have no way to know which Zoom meetings are yours.
-
Approve the Zoom authorization
Zoom shows its consent screen listing the app's permissions. Click Allow. If you are not signed in to Zoom in that browser, you will be asked to sign in first.
-
You're done
You land on a “You're all set!” page showing the Zoom account that was linked. You can close the tab. Nothing else needs to be configured, and you never have to open inameeting.app again.
Starting from Zoom instead
If you install In a Meeting from the Zoom App Marketplace listing, you authorize Zoom first. We then show a “Connect Slack” page so you can complete the Slack half of the setup. The end result is identical — both accounts must be connected before anything happens.
Checking that it worked
Start or join any Zoom meeting from the account you connected. Within a few seconds your Slack status should show 📅 In a Meeting. Leave the meeting and the status clears. If it does not, see Troubleshooting.
3. Permissions we request
Both authorizations are deliberately narrow. Here is every permission and why it exists.
| Side | Permission | Why we need it |
|---|---|---|
| Slack | users.profile:write |
To set your status when a meeting starts and clear it when it ends. Scoped to your own profile only. |
| Slack | users.profile:read |
To read your current status before clearing it, so a status you set manually is never wiped by us. |
| Zoom | Read your user profile | Once, at setup: to read your Zoom user ID, email and display name so we can tell your meeting events apart from other participants'. |
| Zoom | Meeting & presence events | Zoom notifies us when a meeting starts or ends, when you join or leave, and when your Zoom presence changes. These are the triggers for the status update. |
What we cannot do: read your Slack messages, channels or files; change anyone else's Slack profile; access meeting audio, video, chat, recordings or transcripts; start, join, modify or schedule meetings on your behalf.
4. Using the app
There is no interface to learn — after setup the integration runs on its own. This section describes exactly what it does, so nothing surprises you.
What triggers a status change
| When this happens | Your Slack status |
|---|---|
| You join a Zoom meeting | Set to 📅 In a Meeting |
| You start a meeting you host | Set to 📅 In a Meeting |
| You leave the meeting | Cleared |
| The meeting ends | Cleared |
| Your Zoom presence becomes “In a meeting”, “Presenting” or “On a phone call” | Set to 📅 In a Meeting |
| Your Zoom presence returns to available | Cleared |
Good to know
- It's near-instant. Zoom pushes events to us as they happen — there is no polling and no delay of minutes. Expect the status to flip within a few seconds.
- Only your own meetings count. Every incoming event is matched against the Zoom identity you linked. Other people joining or leaving your meeting never touch your status.
- Meetings hosted elsewhere work too. Because we also listen to your Zoom presence, meetings hosted by another company or on someone else's Zoom account still update your status.
- Your manual statuses are safe. When a meeting ends we check your current status first and only clear it if it is still the “In a Meeting” status we set. If you replaced it with something of your own mid-meeting, we leave it alone.
- A status you set before a meeting is replaced, not restored. If you had a custom status and then join a meeting, it becomes “In a Meeting” and is cleared afterwards — the previous text is not brought back.
- Back-to-back meetings are handled. Repeated events for the same state are collapsed, so overlapping or consecutive meetings do not cause flickering.
- One Zoom account per Slack account. The Zoom account you authorize is the one that drives your status. Connecting a different Zoom account replaces the previous link.
Changing the status text or emoji
The status is currently fixed at 📅 In a Meeting for everyone. If you would like different wording for yourself or your team, email [email protected] — per-user customization is on the roadmap and we prioritize by what people ask for.
Reconnecting
If you change Slack workspaces, switch Zoom accounts, or ever revoke access by mistake, just run the setup again from inameeting.app. Re-running it overwrites your existing link — you do not need to remove anything first.
5. Troubleshooting
My Slack status doesn't change when I join a meeting
Work through these in order:
- Both halves connected? Slack alone is not enough. Re-run the setup at inameeting.app and make sure you reach the “You're all set!” page at the end.
- Same Zoom account? If you signed in to the Zoom client with a different account than the one you authorized, we cannot match the event to you. Check the account in your Zoom client's profile menu.
- Right Slack workspace? If you belong to several workspaces, confirm you installed into the one you are looking at. Slack shows the target workspace at the top of the authorization screen.
- Still nothing? Email [email protected] with your Slack workspace name and the Zoom email you connected, and we will look at the event log for your account.
My status is stuck on “In a Meeting” after the meeting ended
This is usually a missed “leave” event — for example if the Zoom client was force-quit or the machine lost network before the meeting closed. Clear your status manually in Slack; the next meeting will set and clear it normally.
If it happens on every meeting, your Slack authorization may have been revoked between the start and the end of the call. Re-run the setup to issue a fresh authorization.
A custom status I set myself was removed
We only clear a status that still matches the “In a Meeting” status we set, so a status you typed yourself during a meeting is left untouched. However, a status set before you join a meeting is overwritten by the meeting status and is not restored afterwards. If you rely on a standing status, set it again after your meeting.
Someone else's meeting activity changed my status
This should not happen — events are matched against your linked Zoom identity. If you see it, the most likely cause is two people having authorized with the same Zoom email. Email [email protected] and we will investigate.
Slack says the app needs admin approval
Your workspace requires admins to approve apps before members install them. Submit the request from the Slack screen; once an admin approves it, run the setup again. Admins can review the exact permissions in this page's Permissions section.
Zoom won't let me authorize the app
Zoom account owners can restrict which Marketplace apps members install. If you see a message about the app not being pre-approved, ask your Zoom account admin to approve In a Meeting in the Zoom App Marketplace under Manage → App Requests.
The status changes late or not at all during very busy periods
Slack limits how often a profile can be updated. In rare cases — many meetings starting and ending within seconds of each other — an update may be skipped. The next event corrects it. No action is needed on your side.
6. Removing the app
You can disconnect at any time, from either side. Removing the Zoom side is the one that also deletes your stored record, so we recommend doing both.
Remove from Zoom
- Sign in to the Zoom App Marketplace.
- Click Manage → Added Apps, or search for “In a Meeting”.
- Find In a Meeting in the list and click Remove.
Zoom notifies us the moment you do this, and we delete your stored record — Slack token, Slack IDs and Zoom identity — automatically. No email required.
Remove from Slack
- Open your Slack workspace in a browser and go to Settings & administration → Manage apps, or visit
your-workspace.slack.com/apps/manage. - Find In a Meeting, open it, and choose Remove App. Members who installed it only for themselves can revoke it from their own Configuration page.
This invalidates the token we hold, so we can no longer read or update your status even if a Zoom event arrives.
Request full deletion
If you want your record deleted without waiting for the automatic path — or you removed the Slack side only — email [email protected] from the address you connected and we will delete it within 30 days.
What happens after you remove it
- Your Slack status stops updating automatically. Any status showing at that moment stays as-is until you change it — remember to clear it if you are removing the app mid-meeting.
- We stop receiving your Zoom events entirely.
- Your stored record is deleted, so re-installing later starts a fresh setup rather than restoring the old link.
- Nothing else in Slack or Zoom is affected — no messages, meetings, recordings or settings are touched.
7. Data, privacy & support
We store only what is needed to match your Zoom identity to your Slack account: your Slack user and workspace IDs, an OAuth token limited to your own profile status, and your Zoom user ID, email and display name. Meeting events are processed as they arrive and are not kept as history. Full details are in our Privacy Policy, and the service terms are in our Terms of Service.
Need help? Email [email protected]. Include your Slack workspace name and the Zoom email you connected so we can find your account quickly.
